The Gathering Place was founded in 1984 by three mothers united by the shared experience of raising children with serious mental illness. The Gathering Place became Houston’s first supportive refuge built on the psychosocial clubhouse model. In 2010, The Gathering Place expanded its impact and became part of The Menninger Clinic.
At The Gathering Place, members are not patients or clients; they are valued contributors. Through a work-ordered day, members have opportunities to engage in units such as front desk operations, communications, culinary activities, art and creative projects, and community outreach. These experiences help members develop practical skills, rebuild confidence, and rediscover a sense of responsibility and belonging in a supportive, judgment-free environment.
Beyond work and skill-building, The Gathering Place emphasizes holistic wellness, social connection, and personal growth. Members can participate in groups focused on mental health education, grief support, creative expression, physical wellness, and life skills. Social activities, field trips, and community events further encourage connection and reduce isolation. The Gathering Place exists to remind every member that they are capable, valued, and not alone on their recovery journey.
